The Gainesville tornadoes of 6 April 1936 were part of a massive tornado outbreak across the Deep South that also heavily damaged Tupelo, Mississippi; the death toll of 203 is generally regarded as the fifth worst in U. S. history. Carl Mydans made this image two months after the destruction.
